Community understands that work in the 21st century has been transformed. Work now requires longer hours for less pay and less job security and where small changes in take home pay can have big consequences for the family budget. To adapt to this new world of work, a new type of Trade Union is needed. One that is designed to protect workers rights and entitlements in the workplace while building stronger communities and involving local neighbourhoods.

The National Union of Mineworkers is alive and kicking
, and is still representing miners, their families and their communities. The NUM is still very active industrially and politically. It is over twenty four years since the start of the Great Miners? Strike of 1984/85. We warned then that if our arguments for a role for coal in our energy requirements were not heeded then the country would pay a heavy price. Twenty two years on we have been proved absolutely correct.

Unite Against Fascism (UAF) is a national campaign with the aim of alerting British society to the rising threat of the extreme right, in particular the British National Party (BNP), gaining an electoral foothold in this country. We aim to unite the broadest possible spectrum of society to counter this threat. Until recently this country has not seen the kind of rise of the extreme right that has blighted many countries elsewhere in Europe. However recently we have seen the election of the BNP to the London Assembly and European parliament. Currently this fascist party has over 50 councillors across the country. On 6 May 2010 there will be local and general elections in Britain. On its current levels of support there is a real danger that the BNP could consolidate its presence on local councils or even win its first Westminster seat |
