About the file types.

  • Word (Open XML) (.docx) are the new Word documents that have been submitted to the ISO for standardisation, they can be opened natively by Word 2007 and other modern office suites, a compatibility pack is available for older versions of Word and Office which allow them to open and save this new document type, alternatively those using the Word 2003 viewer can use the compatibility pack to add support for the new documents.
  • Word (binary) (.doc) these are the most common form of Word documents, however they are no longer the default document format and will be phased out over time, this document can be opened by Word 97 and up, the free Word 2003 viewer and other compatible applications.
  • XPS documents (.xps) are a new XML based paper specification and can be opened natively on Windows Vista, or Windows XP with the XPS viewer.
  • PDF documents (.pdf) are widespread but require most users to install a PDF reader, such as Foxit Reader or Adobe Reader, both of these applications offer a browser toolbar which is completely unnecessary to view PDFs and we recommend that you unselect the option to install the browser toolbar.
